Homemade Crab Rangoon That Taste Better Than Takeout

Crab Rangoon is a well know Chinese appetizer which consists of a cream cheese type filling inside a wonton wrapper. That is the simple explanation as to what a rangoon is. However, the better explanation is that it is a slice of heaven! I mean, that cream cheesy filling is insanely addictive, I can’t have just one and be done!

Finding The Perfect Rangoon

I am like a Crab Rangoon connoisseur. They are my absolute favorite Chinese appetizer which says a lot because I LOVE most Chinese appetizers! I feel like I’m always on a hunt to find the BEST crab rangoon each time I eat at a new restaurant. Some are amazing, others are just okay. And even the ones that are just okay are pretty darn good!

Throughout my pinteresting I found quite a few recipes for crab rangoons and crab rangoon dips. I tried a few of them and tweaked them. And I am extremely happy to announce that this recipe is my absolute favorite. After mastering this appetizer, I don’t know if I will want to order these out again, when I know I can make an amazing batch at home! In fact, the recipe is like a double edged sword. On one hand, it’s so good that I can’t get enough. On the other hand, the recipe is so good that I can’t stop myself from eating too much!

Making The Appetizer

There are two steps to making the crab rangoon; making the filling and putting the rangoons together in the wonton wrappers. Two steps might sound a little much, but each step is easy and doesn’t take a lot of time. And after they are ready to be eaten, you will feel that these are well worth any effort it takes to cook!

Making the filling, you need to cut up the green onions and imitation crab meat. After that, just mix all the other ingredients together. And then the filling is made. That’s it. See, it’s really easy so far!

Now we move on to wrapping up the crab filling in the wontons. This step is a little more involved, however, it is still really easy to do. Lay each wonton out and put some filling in the middle. Then you went the sides of the wonton with water, fold over the wonton to the other side and press down. Continue that same process for the rest of the rangoons. Spray them lightly with cooking spray and bake those bad boys up! So easy!

  • 4 Green Onions Chopped
  • 1.5 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Powdered Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 pkg Wonton Wrappers

Instructions

Crab Rangoon Filling

  • First, soften the cream cheese in the microwave for about a minute, at 30 second increments so as not to overheat.
  • Chop the green onions and imitation crab meat.
  • Add sour cream, green onions, crab meat, worcestershire sauce, powdered sugar, garlic powder and lemon juice to the softened cream cheese and mix well.

Making The Crab Rangoon

  • Place 1 teaspoon of filling onto the center of each wonton wrapper.
  • Brush the edges with water and fold the wonton skin diagonally to form a triangle, pressing edges to seal.
  • Arrange the rangoons on the baking sheet and lightly spray with cooking spray.
  • Air Fry at 380F for 12 – 15 minutes, just until golden brown. Bake at 350F for 15 – 20 minutes.

Versatile Recipe

The filling for these rangoons is to die for. Technically, it’s a little versatile. You can fill wontons with the filling and cook them to serve as crab rangoon. And when you cook them, you can bake, air fry, or deep fry them. So many options. I prefer air frying mine. For one, they cook quicker that way. And the other reason is that they have more of that deep fried texture, but without the yucky oil.

Additionally, you could alter this Asian inspired recipe slightly and bake just the filling in a casserole pan and cook it to serve as a dip. Then, you can dip chips, wontons, pita chips, or crackers to eat this tasty delight.

Either way, you get that same great taste and will be addicted too. You might want to thank me for this or I might need to apologize to you for exposing you to this! Only time will tell, I guess.
